The images that people picture when they hear of the city of Jeddah today are bustling and flourishing. Not surprising though, as this city, which lies on the Red Sea, is often regarded as the most cosmopolitan of all Saudi Arabian cities, a far cry from the former port surrounded by walls until the 1940s. The remarkable development of this city which the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s program demanded, has been achieved in such a short period. Seaports and the King Abdul Aziz Airport are a great boost to the city’s economy. Pilgrims going to the Holy City of Mecca pass through this city making Jeddah one of the most visited cities in the Arab region.
Envisioned as a premier landmark in the city of Jeddah is the proposed Jeddah Riviera Center. This shopping mall will rise on an 82,000-square meter generally flat site along Prince Sultan Road and near Hera Street. Upon completion of the project, the location is destined to become the prime commercial hub of Jeddah. With its proximity from nearby institutions and government agencies, Jeddah Riviera Center will be a catalyst for social change and urban development.
From the word itself, one can easily think that Riverbanks Center coined its name from the banks of the Marikina River. The Riverbanks Center is a conversion of warehouse and other old facilities integrated with new buildings. Thus, this 24-hectare complex is a fusion of old and new structures to offer shopping, entertainment, dining, and leisure activities east of Metro Manila.
Building A is a covered parking building with 60 slots for cars. Building B and C are mixed-use buildings for business interaction, retailing, and malling. Space allotments include a hall for transient vendors, post office, and banks. Building H is a one-story building with 13 leasable spaces for restaurants and food stalls. The complex has recreational facilities such as an amphitheatre, cinemas, and a theme park. There are also facilities for transient living.
The Riverbanks capitalizes on the site as it stands along the banks of the well-maintained and famous Marikina River. Parking is spacious that it even accommodates a terminal for a bus company plying provincial routes.
